So what is an engineering signatory?
They are people with experience and knowledge on various aspects of vehicle construction and modification requirements for vehicles in their state.
For a fee, they will provide advice to owners and vehicle constructors; undertake technical assessments and issue engineering certificates.
It is the responsibility of the vehicle constructor or owner wishing to engage and engineering signatory to establish the signatory's experience for the proposed work and the fee to be charged. You should also ascertain if the signatory carries Professional Indemnity Insurance.
An engineering signatory who certifies a motor vehicle with respect to its construction or modification must:
• personally inspect the vehicle;
• ensure that any construction or modification of a vehicle complies with the requirements of the various state regulations and where applicable, the appropriate Australian Design Rules (ADR's);
• issue an engineering report, which satisfactorily addresses any concerns raised by the inspectors in that state or the Vehicle Safety Board
For more information please contact your local Road Traffic Authority or the Dept of Transport and Regional Services (DOTARS). Here is an article by the NRMA concerning vehicle modification.
